================
Pudugramam is a village in Kollengode in Palakkad Dt, Kerala State. The earliest residents were migrants from Kadambakudi, Ganapathy Agraharam,Mannargudi and Mayiladudurai villages in Thanjavur Dist,Tamilnadu. They migrated from Thanjavur at the time of Tippu Sultan due to religious unrest prevailing in Thanjavur
The earliest settlers in Pudugramam were Narayana Pattar and Raghunatha Pattar from
Kadambakudi. They were very religious Brahmins and they were honoured by Samoodiri Raja
with lands to cultivate paddy..
At the time of migration they had carried with them the idols of Sri.Sundareswara Swamy, Sri.Meenakshi Ambal,Nandikeswarar,Ganapathy and Chandikeswarar whom they were worshipping in Kadambakudi.Because of the troubled times, they preserved the idols under the soil, in the eastern bank of river Gayatri under a banyian tree. A small Kali temple was also there. During the recent Deva prasnam it was found that the Goddess Kali had protected these deities and we have to have a puja for satisfaction of that deity .
One of the residents from the Narayana Pattar family, who had accepted Sanyasaasramam,
went to Kasi.On his return, he brought three Sivalaingam from Kasi one each one was
installed in Kalpathy, Palakkad, Koduvayur and Pudugramam.Siva Lingam in Pudugramam was installed facing west , so Sri Viswanathaswamy is known as Mrithyujaya lingam. It has proved by facts that Sri Viswanathaswamy has saved the lives of devotees who were in distress and danger to life.
A Mahakshetram was constructed by that Sanyasi whose Brindavanam is located within
temple campus with Sri Viswanatha swamy and Sri Vishalakshy Ambal as main deities and
Ganapathy,Kalyanasubramanian,Bhairavar,Chandikeswarar,Suryan and Dakshinamurthy as
parivara Devas. Those deities which were hidden on east bank of river Gayatri were also
installed near Suryan which had been installed earlier, as a separate complex.
Thus we have two sannidhis for Siva and Parvathy.
Deva prasnam says that Sri Viswanathaswamy and Sri Sundareswarar are of equal importance and all pujas should be done equally.
A small idol of Anjaneya was found about 70 years ago in the temple campus. It was installed as a deity and puja is done everyday. An Anjaneya Utsavam is held for a week in the month of May every year.
There are number of instances where Lord Viswanatha has saved lives of individuals, as
Mrithyujaya. Prayer to Sri.Visalakshy with Swayamvara Parvathi mantram has brought
marriage to girls.
Temple is under the control of Malabar Devaswam Board(MDB). Day-to-day administration
is done by trustees nominated by MDB after proper inquiry.Puja is done by Sivacharya.
The present Sivacharya is the fourth generation of earliest Sivacharya. We do not know much about the earliest Sivacharya, who was known as Patta Kurukkal. His son Sri Rama Kurukkal, according to Deva prasnam was a Mahan, an ardent messenger of Siva. His steadfast devotion was incomparable. His son Sri Viswanath Kurukkal was a devoted priest. Now his sons Ravi,Sankaran,Manju and Guhan are now continuing the puja in the same manner.
Temple had vast landholdings and its revenue was sustaining the expenses of the temple. After the land legislation in Kerala, temple lost all its revenue. Now it is at the mercy of MDB.Temple staff including Sivacharya is not getting salary worth the name.It is now met partly by devotees which is not adequate under the present day cost of living.
Kumbabishekam of the temple is proposed to be celebrated on May 3, 2012 under the present Sivacharyas Sri.Ravi Kurukkal and Sankara Kurukkal along with his brothers. Temple is expecting contributions/donation from all devotees and those residents now settled down in different parts of the world.A website has been opened as
A committee has been elected to conduct the kumbabishekam.A current account has been
opened in The Punjab Nation Bank,Kollengode-678506. Remittances can be made to the
current a/c no.429600 2100004004, IFSC Code No. PUNB 0429600 or sent to The Treasurer,
Grama Jana Samooham, Pudugramam,Kollengode-678506.
(Ph nos.04923 315828,08590082021, 09947949874.)
Sri.Meenakshi, Sundareswaraswamy, Vishalakshi and Viswanathaswamy have blessed
the devotees in the village and some eminent persons have hailed from this village like
Sri.R.V.Subramaniam,a top administrator, Dr.P.K.Kalyanaraman a consulting doctor,
Sri.P.S.Ramachandran, a leading advocate and now a consultant for an international companyand a Judge in the High Court of Kerala.

Nice to read your blog. We used to live at Mettu theruvu in Mottai doctor's house. I really miss the anjaneya utsavam. Your blog brought back lots of memories. Thank you for that -- Kala
What a lovely blog of pudugramam where we have spent some wonderful times at my grandfather's place.. mottau doctor was my grandfather and his house is on mettu theruvu..tho sold after his demise.. your blog brought back so many nostalgic memories.. wonder if any of the old families still continue there..thank you.
I am S Ramakrishnan. My grandfather and his ancestors hail from Pudugramam village. My father was two and a half years old when he lost his father P S Krishnan (he was 21 or 22 at that time). My father was brought up by his mother and his maternal grandfather in Koduvayur village and thus the Pudugramam touch was lost. My ancestors were hailed in Pudugramam as Jyosya Kudumbam because of their proficiency in Astrology. My father PK Subramaniam was also a famous astrologer. He taught me Astrology and with the blessings of my ancestors, I am doing well in astrological sites like Guruji, AstroTalk, etc. I am also a teacher for IIT and NEET students and live in Chennai. One day, I hope to visit Pudugramam before I die. When people mentioned Mottai Doctor, Mettu Theruvu, etc, I felt in my mind that I had been so close to all these places and people. Thank you and best wishes to you.
